New Mazda Rotary Engine Sports Car Confirmed

CEO of Mazda stated the response to the SP concept car (shown above) was good enough to begin the production of a rotary engine sports car project.
Detail of the official release can be found in a MotorTrend article here.
There was rumor and speculation for a long time whether or not these would come back as the design of the rotary was not one know for long term reliability.
It is possible the car will be a rotary hybrid like everything else but I am optimistic that this may help reliability as it could reduce the wear on these engines.
For those that don’t fully know how the rotary engines worked, they were a design that happened to put a lot of strain on one or two specific components within the engine which is why they were known to blow up prematurely.
A hybrid platform could share the work burden and make these engines conserve power for when it is needed and hopefully make them a longer lasting powertrain.
There is no specifics as to whether it will make a return as a new RX model or if it will be adapted into a new version of the mx-5 (which I would approve of).
We will keep you up to date as Mazda informs us of new information on this model.

We’ll see you next week,
